Primary school in Permatang Pauh damaged in fire


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A block at a primary school in Permatang Pauh here caught fire on Friday (Sept 22).

The fire gutted the third floor of SK Permatang Tok Kandu where the blaze razed five classrooms.

State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said firemen were deployed to the scene after being informed of the 6pm fire by the public.

"When we arrived we saw the third floor at one of the school blocks was on fire, firemen from Perai fire station had been deployed to contain the situation," he said in a statement.

The spokesman said three of the classrooms were totally destroyed while two classrooms were 40% destroyed.

He said the fire was contained at about 6.30pm and no casualties had been reported during the incident.

Firemen from the Jalan Perak, Bayan Baru, Penanti, Kepala Batas and Bayan Baru fire stations also helped in the operation.

Photos and videos were widely shared on social media.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
