Over RM300mil in traffic summonses settled from January to August, says Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic offenders have settled over RM300mil worth of summonses this year, with over half the sum paid online through the MyBayar Saman application.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim said from January to August, 2023, a total of 3,820,526 summonses amounting to RM302.43mil were settled by traffic offenders.

"Our records also show that RM169.2mil from 2,436,732 summonses was paid through the MyBayar Saman app.

"This shows a big increase in settlements online compared to the RM37.59mil from 207,217 summonses during the same period last year," he told reporters at Bukit Aman on Monday (Sept 25).

"Our records also show that from January to August, a total of 1,913,840 summonses were issued for various offences compared to the 6,446,342 summonses issued last year," said Comm Mat Kasim.

He said 1,310,764 accidents were reported from January to August, involving 4,366 fatalities.

"Nearly two-thirds of the deaths involved motorcyclists, at 2,641," he said.

Noting that most of the deaths occurred in the 14-35 age bracket, he advised young people to ride safely and responsibly.

He said it cannot be overlooked that motorcycles are the most economical form of transportation for many, but riders must do their part through safe road habits and proper maintenance of their vehicles.

"We have also seen that many students ride motorcycles to school and we hope parents will monitor their children closely.

"Those allowing their children to ride must ensure that they have a valid licence (and are) equipped with the knowledge to ride according to the law," he said.
