Baby turtles make a splash at sanctuary

KERTEH: Baby turtles hatched from a clutch of 111 green turtle eggs were released to the sea from their nest at the Ma’ Daerah Turtle Sanctuary here.

The babies hatched on July 27.

The sanctuary, which was set up in June 1999 with the cooperation of the Fisheries Department, WWF-Malaysia and Ineos-PCG Acetyl, measures some 23.65ha in size with a 1.7km long beach.

Last year, the sanctuary saw 48,569 babies hatched from 687 nests, as compared to 30,845 babies from 35,869 eggs in 2021.

As at August, there were 890 nests with 79,582 eggs. — Bernama
