GEORGE TOWN: It was a joyous moment for 23 couples when they tied the knot during the Mid-Autumn Festival at the Penang Chinese Town Hall.

Salesman Yeap Mou Han, 27, said he and his girlfriend Loo Jia Nee, 22, decided to exchange their vows yesterday as it was an auspicious day for the Chinese community.

“Now, every Mid-Autumn festival, we will also be celebrating our wedding anniversary.

“I was a bit surprised to learn that there were so many couples taking part in this ceremony. On top of that, our Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, was present too,” he said.

The couple was among those taking part in the mass wedding ceremony organised by the Penang Chinese Town Hall in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival as well as for the coming 2023 National Registration Day on Oct 1.

Hairstylist Wang Chee Hang, 26, also chose this occasion to end his bachelorhood.

“Today is considered a lucky day for the Chinese. So, we decided to get married,” he said, adding that their wedding reception would only be held next year.

His wife, nurse Chen Shi Chee, 29, said they had known each other since 2015, but their relationship became more serious three years ago.

“I feel that we are fated for each other,” she said.

Chow congratulated all the couples who tied the knot on this auspicious day.

“Today, we are not only celebrating the mass wedding on the Mid-Autumn Festival but also the 2023 National Registration Day, which will fall on Oct 1.

“This event will go down in history and have special memories for all the newlyweds,” he said.

Chow also praised the organiser and the state National Registration Department (NRD) for holding the event.

Also present were NRD deputy director Awangku Iswandy Awangku Serma and Penang Chinese Town Hall chairman Tan Sri Tan Khoon Hai.
