Male tiger captured in Pos Bihai

GUA MUSANG: The tiger believed to have been attacking pet dogs of the Temiar Orang Asli community in Pos Bihai since July was caught on Friday (Sept 29).

Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the male tiger, given the name "Apek Bihai", is estimated to be two years old and was healthy when captured.

He said following a complaint from Kampung Hak villagers in July, the department set a trap on Aug 6, adding that more traps were laid on Sept 8, with assistance from the Malayan Tiger Conservation Unit (UKHM).

"The tiger will be sent to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sungkai, Perak," Mohamad Hafid said in a statement today.

He said, based on records, the first case of a tiger attack at Pos Bihai was on July 5, 2021, involving a tiger named "Syamilla Bihai", which caused serious injury to an Orang Asli man. It was then successfully captured and placed at the wildlife rescue centre.

He said the second case occurred on Jan 7 last year, when an Orang Asli man was killed after being attacked by a tiger. He added that the beast had to be shot dead after it tried to attack Perhilitan personnel during an operation.- Bernama
