Sabah mall closes for a day after fire

KOTA KINABALU: A shopping mall here closed for business after a fire broke out at one of its restaurants on Sunday (Oct 1).

The fire started from the ceiling exhaust fan in the kitchen of a restaurant located on the basement floor around 10.30am.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini said the fire was quickly brought under control after firemen arrived.

“We managed to bring the fire under control at 10.54am and operations ceased at 11.10am,” he said in a statement.

He said no one was injured in the incident.

Following the blaze, customers were evacuated from the building while retail shops were told to close.

The mall is expected to re-open on Monday after cleaning up works are completed.

A notice was also put up on the premises’ website to inform customers of the closure.
