Fire in restaurant kitchen causes mall to close

Cause for mall closure: Thick smoke arising from the fire in the restaurant kitchen in the mall.

KOTA KINABALU: A shopping mall here has had to be shut down for a day to allow for ventilator and cleaning-up works to be carried out following a fire in a restaurant kitchen.

The fire, which started from the restaurant’s ceiling exhaust fan that spread to the kitchen, was reported at around 10.30am yesterday.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini said the fire at the restaurant, located at the basement, was brought under control after firemen arrived.

“We managed to bring the fire under control at 10.54am and the operations ended at 11.10am,” he said in a statement.

He said no one was injured in the incident.

Following the blaze, customers were asked to evacuate the building while workers were told to shut down shops for cleaning up works.

A notice was also put up at the shopping mall’s website to inform customers of the closure.
