Minister: Large police presence nothing to worry about

KUALA LUMPUR: The large police presence during the campaign period for the Pelangai by-election is to “maintain omnipresence”, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said the police are also focused on ensuring safety and security while maintaining public order.

“The police are also monitoring the situation to ensure that no one raises sensitive issues that can jeopardise unity and public order,” he told a press conference after attending the ministry’s Madani programme yesterday.

Saifuddin Nasution said the police always act professionally and the public did not have to worry about their large presence.

“Abide by the law throughout the campaign period for the Pelangai state seat. Parties are not prohibited from approaching or getting close to the rakyat. The police are present to maintain the safety of everyone,” he added.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan had previously said that the large police presence during campaigning for the Pelangai by-election had worried party supporters.

He said such an action would not give a good impression of the country’s democratic process.

Voting for the Pelangai by-election will take place on Saturday while early voting will be held tomorrow.
