Man killed, six others hurt in car-van collision in Gerik


IPOH: A 60-year-old man was killed after the car he was in crashed head on with a van at KM23 Phase 2 of the East-West Highway between Gerik and Kupang, Kedah.

Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood said the elderly man, who was heading to Gerik from Kupang, was confirmed to have died on the spot following the incident on Monday (Oct 2) at about 4am.

Supt Zulkifli said a 21-year-old man, who was driving the van, had lost control of the vehicle and it swerved to the opposite road and crashed into the car.

"Following the head-on collision, the van overturned," he said in a statement.

"The van also had nine other passengers, aged between seven and 44, while a 23-year-old female passenger was in the car," he said, adding that six of them sustained light injuries while five others were uninjured.

Supt Zulkifli said the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

He said those with information about the accident can contact investigating officer Insp R. Kishen Raj at 011-2624 9291.

"We advise motorists to be more careful while driving and express our condolences to the victim's family," he added.
