MELAKA: Foreign migrants operating stalls at the Melaka Sentral bus terminal have alarmed a state exco who has called for more operations against them. “The presence of these migrants operating roadside stalls at Melaka Sentral has caused uneasiness and anxiety among the locals,” said Melaka women, family development and welfare committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Noordin.
She lauded the recent arrest of 23 undocumented individuals by the Immigrant Department at Melaka Sentral on Sunday as timely and necessary after locals had complained about their presence.
Kalsom, who is also the representative for Pengkalan Batu, said locals have dubbed the bus terminal and the surrounding area as “Little Dhaka” due to the high number of foreigners there.
Following the recent raid, Melaka Immigration Department’s director Anirwan Fauzee Mohd Aini said 16 out of 23 of those detained were from Myanmar while the rest were from Bangladesh.
They were aged between 20 and 40.
“There were also attempts by some of these foreigners to flee from my officers during the operation but they were arrested,” he said.
He added that all those detained were being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
