Pelangai by-election: Barisan has 55.5% chance of winning, says independent pollster

PETALING JAYA: With less than two days till the Pelangai by-election, an independent survey has shown that Barisan Nasional has a good chance at prevailing against Perikatan Nasional.

According to the survey, Barisan stands a 55.5% chance of winning Pelangai, while Perikatan’s chances are 43.2%. The remaining 1.3% voters are undecided.

“Based on our findings, it was found that Perikatan’s narrative of change still hasn’t penetrated voters in Pelangai, though there is an increase of support towards Perikatan,” said the survey.

The survey, dubbed as “Pelangai Memilih” was conducted by independent data analyst Shahrill Sabarudin, Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Awang Pawi, and Dr Suffian Mansor, and among others.

The survey was held from Sept 29 to Oct 2 and it polled 1,772 residents in the entire Pelangai state seat’s nine polling district centres, and it also has a 2.2% margin error.

The survey also showed that 69.8% of voters are satisfied with the performance of Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, while 11.9% stated that they are very satisfied.

“The strength of the state government and huge support towards the Mentri Besar gives a significant impact on the perception of Pelangai locals towards Barisan’s campaign.

“Pakatan voters, especially the Chinese and Indians in Manchis, Telemong and Simpang Pelangai, are seen to be confident at voting for Barisan because they know the need for cooperation between Barisan and Pakatan, as well as rejecting the ultra-Malay-Muslim narrative by PAS,” said the survey.

The survey also showed that locals are increasingly supporting Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.

According to the survey, 57.1% stated that they are satisfied with Anwar’s leadership and another 3.1% stated that they are very satisfied.

“Now, it is seen that Felda settlers are warming up to the Prime Minister and the unity government,” added the survey.

At the same time, the survey also showed that 71.3% of Pelangai locals agreed that its former state assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun had done much for the constituency, while another 21.8% said they agreed very much.

“The performance of Johari has impacted Pelangai locals and this gives an edge to Barisan to carry on with Johari’s legacy,” added the survey.

Pelangai has 16,371 registered voters and Johari previously won the seat with a 4,048 majority in 2022 during GE15.

The Pelangai seat was held by former Pahang mentri besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob from 1986 for eight terms until last year.
