IPOH: Five people, including two senior citizens, were killed in two fatal crashes along the country’s highways.

Lau Hock Hing @ Lau Foo Hin, 83, from Ampang, Selangor, and his passenger Pang Ah Kau @ Pang Ko Yung, 76, from the Jalan San Peng flats in Kuala Lumpur, died on the spot after he lost control of the four-wheel drive (4WD) he was driving, crashing it into the back of a trailer.

The incident occurred at around 5.45am at KM366 northbound of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near Slim River yesterday.

Muallim OCPD Supt Mohd Hasni Mohd Nasir said the victims’ bodies were sent to Hospital Slim River for a post-mortem.

“We believe the cause of the accident is that the 4WD had lost control before it slammed into the back of the trailer, which had stopped on the emergency lane,” he said in a statement.

“The driver of the trailer, who was unharmed, is believed to have stopped by the side of the road to rest.

“The driver was shocked when informed by members of the public that the 4WD had crashed into the back of his trailer,” he said, adding that the front part of the vehicle had also caught fire after crashing into the trailer.

Officer-in-charge of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre Faiezaruddin Mohd Yusop said the victims were found trapped in the wrecked vehicle.

In DUNGUN, Terengganu, three motorcyclists were killed while three others sustained injuries in a major accident involving six motorcycles at KM333.1 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) heading towards Kuantan near the Paka exit early yesterday morning.

OCPD Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir said the deceased were Muhammad Shah Run Nizam Jaafar, 20, Muhammad Fitri Hanif Rohami, 18, and Ahmad Osama Ramadhan Laidin, 20.

All of them succumbed to severe head and body injuries at the scene.

The three injured motorcyclists were Muhammad Firzani Hilman Ariffadhillah, 20, Muhammad Haziq Haikal Ismail, 17, and Muhammad Afiq Kamal, 19, who suffered severe injuries to his right leg.

Supt Maizura said the incident was believed to have occurred when the motorcycle ridden by Muhammad Firzani was hit from behind by another motorcycle while travelling from Paka to Kemaman, causing the victim to overturn on the road.

“A group of motorcycles coming from behind is believed to have initially attempted to avoid each other but failed, resulting in the collision. The impact caused three of the motorcycles to crash into the road divider, and the victims were thrown onto the road,” Supt Maizura told Bernama.

It is believed that all those involved were heading home to Kemaman after enjoying nasi lemak at the Paka rest and recreation area, she said, adding that the bodies of the victims were sent to Hospital Dungun forensic unit while the injured were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.
