Johor records 218% increase in dengue cases up to ME40 over last year

JOHOR BARU: The number of cumulative dengue cases in Johor for epidemiological week 40 (ME40), Oct 1 to 7, went up to 7,994 cases compared with 2,518 in the corresponding period last year.

“This represents an increase of 218% with 3,249 (40.6%) being epidemic locality cases while 4,745 (59.4%) are non-epidemic locality cases," state health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said in a statement.

However, he said ME40 registered a decline in new dengue cases with 218, against 233 in ME39 (Sept 24 to 30).

Ling said Johor Baru district had the highest number of cases with 163, followed by Kulai (24) and Batu Pahat (seven).

He said Kota Tinggi had six, Kluang five, Segamat four, Muar and Pontian three cases each, and Mersing recording one case.

Ling added that there were 15 cumulative deaths from ME01 to ME40 this year compared with one death in the corresponding period last year.

“We have issued 4,499 compound notices totalling RM2.18mil so far this year to owners whose premises were found to be breeding places for Aedes mosquitoes and 63.3% paid the fines," he said.

On the Covid-19 situation in the state, Ling said there were 400,946 cumulative cases as of Oct 7, of which 397,884 were local infections while 3,062 were imported cases.

“Currently, five Covid-19 patients are being treated in hospitals and no patients have been admitted to the intensive care unit,’’ he said.

He added that Johor did not record a drastic increase in Covid-19 cases for the past few months and bed usage at hospitals was below 1.0%.

Ling said the state recorded 492 cases of Covid-19 Omicron subvariant XXB as of Oct 7 this year. There were 272 cases in Johor Baru, followed by Muar (61), Kulai (41), Batu Pahat (35), Kluang (25), Kota Tinggi (24), Pontian (16), Tangkak (14), Segamat (three) and Mersing (one).

“The Covid-19 situation in Johor is under control although there are cases of the subvariant XXB in the state," he said.

Ling also advised those who have not received the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to immediately register to get it in order to protect themselves and their families.
