SERI ISKANDAR: The proposal to build an international airport here has been submitted to relevant ministries, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said the state government is hopeful that the request would be approved to further develop the state.

"We submitted the proposals to the Finance and Transport ministries.

"While approval is subject to the Transport Ministry, it all comes down to the budget," he told reporters after attending the Tanya Cikgu Saarani programme at UiTM Seri Iskandar here on Monday (Oct 9).

On July 29, state infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said a 1,618ha plot of land near Felcra Nasaruddin had been identified for the project.

Mohammad Nizar said the land is partly owned by Felcra, State Secretary Incorporated and the state government.

Saarani said the decision to build the airport was due to demand.

"In line with the state's Lumut Maritime Industrial City project, we saw the demand to set up a cargo terminal.

"During our meeting with the Transport Ministry, we have expressed our intention to set up the terminal," he said.
