Perak needs a new international airport, says MB

SERI ISKANDAR: A new international airport is needed due to the demands for a cargo terminal, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said with the development of new industries in the state, there would be a need for a cargo terminal.

“In line with the state’s Lumut Maritime Industrial City project, we saw the demand to set up a cargo terminal. During our meeting with the Transport Ministry, we have expressed our intention and we are hopeful that it will be approved as it will be beneficial in the long term,” he told reporters after attending the Tanya Cikgu Saarani programme at UiTM Seri Iskandar here yesterday.

“The airport will also help boost the state’s Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan,” he added.

On July 29, state infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said a 1,618ha plot of land near Felcra Nasaruddin has been identified for the project.

Mohammad Nizar said the land is partly owned by Felcra, State Secretary Incorporated, and the state government.

Saarani said the proposal has already been submitted to the Finance and Transport Ministries.

“While the approval is subject to the Transport Ministry, it all goes down to the budget.

“Therefore, we hope that the Federal Government will agree to the proposal,” he added.
