Barisan ready to assist GPS in Jepak by-election if asked, says Zahid

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional is ready to assist Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the Jepak by-election if requested, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Barisan chairman said he was confident of GPS' strength to campaign and win the by-election.

"If we are asked, we will help to campaign in Jepak.

"GPS is a strong coalition and Jepak is a GPS seat.

"We believe GPS has strong machinery to be able to retain Jepak," he told reporters after chairing the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's coordination meeting with rural executive councillors (Mexclub) here on Wednesday (Oct 11).

The Jepak seat fell vacant when its assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip passed away on Sept 15.

Jepak has been held by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the backbone party of GPS, since the constituency was created in 1996.

The Election Commission has set nomination for the Jepak by-election on Oct 21 and polling on Nov 4.
