Cops bust online gambling in Papar

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police rounded up nine local men for running an online gambling call centre from a shop at Jalan Bukit Manggis Benoni, Papar.

Acting from a tip-off, personnel from the state Kepayan police anti-vice gambling and secret societies division (D7) raided the premises during the operation dubbed “Op Dadu” at 8pm on Oct 3.

Sabah CID chief Senior Asst Comm Azmi Abd Rahim said they also seized items, including desktop computers, bank cards and cell phones used for online gambling activities.

“The premises was run by nine men aged between 19 and 31 as a call centre,” he said when contacted on Wednesday (Oct 11).

"From our investigations, the suspects had targeted customers in the country,” he added.

The suspects and seized items have been brought to the Papar district police station for further probe, he said.

SAC Azmi said the case was being investigated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
