Mobilise assistance to help Palestinian civilians in Gaza, says Suhakam

PETALING JAYA: The international community needs to mobilise humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian civilians trapped in Gaza, says the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam)

"Suhakam also urges restraint on all parties with hostages, emphasizing the potential humanitarian catastrophe that could result from the lack of access to water and food," it said.

"We vehemently stand for the protection and preservation of human dignity and rights for every individual, regardless of their race, religion or nationality, even in times of conflict," added Suhakam.

The Commission said it condemns the violence that has led to the loss of life, invoking fear and despair among innocent civilians in the region.

It said that the destruction of public infrastructure in Gaza such as residential buildings and health facilities are serious violations of the laws and customs applicable in international armed conflict.

The Commission added in a press release on Wednesday (Oct 11) that it urges the international community to look into and immediately tackle the root causes of the humanitarian tragedy and to find solutions that will lead to a lasting peace.

"We will continue to support all efforts to ensure that Palestinians are able to live in peace within their own internationally recognized borders, in accordance with United Nations resolutions recognizing the State of Palestine," added Suhakam.
