JOHOR BARU: Three individuals, including a Bangladeshi man, are facing the gallows after being charged at the Magistrate’s Court here for distributing drugs earlier this month.
The accused, Chin Kai Xian, 40; Chan Yi Hui, 33; and Shahinur, 41, were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which was read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The Act provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
The charges were read to them by the court interpreter in front of Magistrate Hidayatul Syuhada Shamsudin here on Sunday (Oct 15).
According to the charge sheet, the trio had allegedly distributed dangerous drugs believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 4.7kg.
The offence was allegedly committed at 2.30am on Oct 4 at a premises on Jalan Setia Tropika 1/8, Taman Setia Tropika, Johor Baru.
No bail was offered as the crime is a non-bailable offence.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Aqilah Ahmad Rofaie.
Chin and Shahinur were represented by Mohd Daud Ismail, while Chan was not represented.
The court then set Nov 16 for next mention.
On Oct 11, Johor Police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said that three men, including a foreigner, were arrested in a raid in Kempas.
The trio was part of a drug syndicate that used a tyre shop in Kempas as a syabu packing centre for the overseas market.
The syndicate had been operating at the tyre shop since August.
"The drugs were hidden in LED light sockets, and the syndicate was using services by a courier company to send them overseas," he said, adding that the raid was conducted in Kempas and Kulai from 5pm on Oct 3, until 3am on Oct 4.
