IPOH: The MIC and Makkal Sakhti joint secretariat will increase support for the unity government by uniting the Indian community in Barisan Nasional, says Datuk Seri RS Thanenthiran.

“Our country cannot afford anymore ‘cracks’ within the party,” said the Makkal Sakhti president.

“Barisan used to be a strong force, but right now it’s getting weaker. Our party will remain as it is, and the same with MIC.

But we now share the same goal, which is to unite the Indian community under the same umbrella,” he told reporters here yesterday.

On Oct 9, MIC secretary-general Datuk RT Rajasekaran said the secretariat will focus on aiding the community, where it will coordinate strategies and action plans through two bodies, namely a steering committee and a technical committee.

Thanenthiran said that the members of both parties have welcomed the secretariat.

“MIC had been established for nearly 77 years, while our party started some 15 years ago.

“Just recently, I went to Kedah for an MIC general meeting, where our party was invited to attend for the very first time.

“I was also in Penang on Friday, where MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran invited me to explain to their members about the secretariat.

“We hope the secretariat will unite and make the Indian community stronger,” he said.
