JOHOR BARU: Johor recorded an increase in cumulative dengue cases in epidemiology week 41 (ME41) to 8,233 cases compared with 2,648 in the corresponding period in 2022.
State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the number of cumulative cases registered this year represented an increase of 221%.
"From the total of 8,233 cases, 3,351 cases (40.6%) are epidemic locality while 4,882 (59.3%) are non-epidemic locality," he said in a statement.
Ling said ME41 (161023) witnessed a hike in new dengue fever cases with 239 against 218 cases recorded in ME40.
He said from the 239 cases, Johor Baru district has the highest with 179, followed by Kulai (21) and Batu Pahat with 12 cases.
Ling said Kluang has nine cases, Kota Tinggi with seven, Pontian has four, Tangkak and Segamat each with three cases, one in Muar and no cases recorded in Mersing.
He added there were 15 cumulative deaths from ME01 to ME41 this year compared with one death in the corresponding period of 2022.
"We have issued 4,677 compound notices totalling RM2.27mil so far this year to premises owners found to be breeding places of Aedes mosquitoes and 62.9% paid the fines," said Ling.
On the Covid-19 situation, he said there were 400,966 cumulative cases in Johor as of Saturday (Oct 14) of which 397,902 were local infections while 3,064 were imported cases.
"Currently, 10 Covid-19 patients are being treated in hospitals and no patients have been admitted to the intensive care unit," said Ling.
He added Johor did not record a drastic increase in Covid-19 cases for the past few months and the bed usage at hospitals for Covid-19 patients was below 1.0%.
Ling said the state recorded 492 cases of Covid-19 Subvariant XXB as of Oct 14, 2023 with 272 cases in Johor Baru, Muar (61), Kulai (41), Batu Pahat (35), Kluang (25), Kota Tinggi (24), Pontian (16), Tangkak (14), Segamat with three cases and one in Mersing.
"The Covid-19 situation in Johor is under control although there are cases of the Covid-19 Subvariant XXB in the state," he said.
Ling also advised those who have not received the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to immediately register and get the vaccine to protect themselves and their families.
