KUALA LUMPUR: Allowing MPs to live stream their parliamentary speeches on social media will prove that Perikatan Nasional leaders have the ability to engage in great debates, says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

As an example, the Opposition Leader said his speech on Budget 2024 received a lot of traction on social media.

“If we were allowed to live stream to the entire country, it will prove that the Opposition, through Perikatan, can deliver great debates and (this) will help the people.

“For instance, when I was giving my speech... our national followers increased dramatically,” Hamzah said while debating Budget 2024 in Parliament on Monday (Oct 16).

“Today, we express ‘condolences’ to all MPs, including our friends over there, especially Arau (PN's Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim), who is the current ‘TikTok King’ in Malaysia,” added Hamzah.

He was responding to Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), who interjected and asked about the current ban on live streams of parliamentary speeches.

Earlier on Monday, Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul ruled that MPs will not be allowed to live stream their Parliamentary speeches on social media.

Johari said the moment an MP speaks to an audience via live stream, they are no longer concentrating on parliamentary proceedings.

“This is very bad. In this House, MPs have to prioritise the people,” said Johari.

He added that Parliament was already streamed on RTM and YouTube.

The current Parliament meeting will continue until Nov 30.
