Number of landlords renting out 'grave-like' rooms in Ipoh is small, says mayor

IPOH: Less than 2% of landlords in Ipoh rent out “grave-like” rooms, says Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

The Ipoh Mayor did not share the number of landlords in Ipoh but said that enforcement and monitoring by the Ipoh City Council was ongoing.

"The cases in Ipoh are not that critical, and such scenarios are usually found in the city centre areas.

"Such narrow, small and partitioned rooms are usually rented out to foreign workers," he told reporters after presenting awards to the cleanest restaurants and cafes at the city council’s building on Monday (Oct 16).

Rumaizi was asked to comment on Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming’s statement that stern action would be taken against premises owners who rent out "grave-like" rooms.

On Sunday, Nga said that the ministry would be working with local councils and other agencies to monitor those involved.

He had said that some of these rented rooms were narrow and small, without proper ventilation and windows that might lead to health and fire risks.

Rumaizi said action would be taken against owners renting out such rooms.
