Retiree dies, his wife seriously hurt in collision with lorry in Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: A government retiree was killed while his wife suffered severe head injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry in the east coast Semporna district on Monday (Oct 16).

The 64-year-old man, driving a Toyota Fortuner, died on the spot following the accident at about 9.30am at KM 31 Jalan Semporna-Tawau.

Semporna Police Chief Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said from the initial probe. It was believed the man had lost control of his vehicle before it veered into the opposing lane.

"As a result, the Toyota Fortuner crashed into the oncoming lorry driven by a 58-year-old man," he said.

He added that the man and his wife were headed to Tawau from Semporna when the incident occurred.

"The vehicle spun as a result of the collision while the lorry ended up in a ditch," he said, adding the road was wet due to rain.

Supt Mohd Farhan said the woman was rushed to the Semporna Hospital while the lorry driver, who only sustained minor injuries, was sent to the Tawau Hospital.

Fire and Rescue chief Madzlan Sarman said the couple was initially trapped in the Toyota Fortuner following the accident.
