Three universities to study child-friendly city concept in Sarawak

SIBU: A consortium of three universities will conduct a situational analysis of the child-friendly city concept adopted by six local authorities in Sarawak.

These universities include the University of Technology Sarawak, Swinburne University and University of Malaysia Sarawak.

Local authorities in Kuching North, Kuching South, Padawan, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu had signed with the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) to establish the child-friendly city initiative.

Datuk Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the next step was to analyse how child-friendly these cities are and what could be done to improve them.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday (Oct 16), the Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister said the three universities would later develop a proposal for the local authorities to work on to fulfil the initiative.

"Unicef will monitor the implementation for three years. We hope that the organisation will recognise these cities as child-friendly cities," she added.
