SHAH ALAM: A former head of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) has been slapped with four counts of falsifying documents for the purpose of cheating.
Former director-general Datuk Dr Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim was charged at the Sessions Court here before judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud yesterday with faking the documents, which were quotations for the crash test results of several vehicles.
According to the charge sheets, Khairil Anwar, 47, had allegedly falsified documents from four separate companies for 16 cars from Thailand sent to the Miros Crash Test Laboratory in Bukit Katil, Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
He is accused of committing the four offences on July 24, 2017 at Lot 125, Jalan TKS1 in Taman Kajang Sentral, Kajang.
He is accused of forging the documents from Bright Ability Sdn Bhd, Perantice Land Sdn Bhd, Tanjung Nova Sdn Bhd and Winntrack Auto.
The former top civil servant claimed trial to all four charges under Section 468 of the Penal Code, and if found guilty, would be liable to a jail term of seven years and a fine for each charge.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamri proposed bail of RM100,000 with one surety as well as for Khairil Anwar to surrender his international passport.
However, his defence counsel Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent asked for bail of RM20,000, saying the accused had fully cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The judge allowed bail at RM50,000 and ordered the accused to surrender his passport.
Khairil Anwar posted bail.
The court also set additional conditions including prohibiting him from contacting any of the witnesses, who were mostly from Miros, as well as prohibiting him from accessing any of the office computers or Miros-related documents.
He was also ordered to report to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at the beginning of every month.
Awang Kerisnada set Nov 21 for the case to be mentioned.
