Shouting match in Parliament over Howard Lee's Quranic interpretation

KUALA LUMPUR: A shouting match erupted in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 17) after Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) questioned Howard Lee (PH-Ipoh Timor) over his video of a Quranic interpretation that went viral last month.

"Where did he learn how to interpret the Quran?" asked Ahmad Marzuk while debating Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Oct 17).

Lee stood up but Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor switched off his microphone and said Ahmad Marzuk had the floor.

Lee could still be heard saying Ahmad Marzuk had made a malicious accusation against him and demanded that Ahmad Marzuk retract his statement.

Mohd Ramli then asked Ahmad Marzuk to explain his remarks so he could rule on the issue.

In response, he cited several verses from the Quran before Lee interjected and more MPs got involved in the shouting match.

Mohd Ramli then issued a warning to Lee and Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang).

Despite warnings by the Deputy Speaker, the shouting match among the MPs.

Mohd Ramli then told MPs who participated in the shouting match to come forward but no one did.

"If I were to punish MPs, it won't be a light one. This is my warning," he said, adding he would look at footage of the day's Parliament sitting.

The Deputy Speaker then said he would rule on the matter by Wednesday (Oct 18).

Last month, Lee posted a video on TikTok where he quoted a Quranic verse.

Lee's remarks were met with backlash and he subsequently apologised for the video.
