SIBU: The media in Sarawak has been urged to help promote the country's tourism industry, especially with Visit Malaysia Year set for 2026.
"As Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, I also call on the media to work with us to highlight and promote Malaysian tourism as a global brand, especially the unique cultural and natural attractions that Sarawak can offer," said Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (pic).
Speaking at the Sibu Journalists Association's (SJA) 30th-anniversary celebration, Tiong also called on journalists to report factually and ethically.
"In an era dominated by uncertainties of the media, you bear even greater responsibilities. I understand the pressing time constraints you are facing when reporting news. However, I appeal to you to always maintain your professional ethics, objectivity, and fairness and to provide the public with truthful and reliable information," he stressed.
Tiong's speech was read by his press secretary, Ross Sia.
He also said he hoped that media professionals would always adhere to their original ethos and experience in fact-checking, rather than getting swept up in the vicious competition of "scoops" and "clicks”.
"Remember to keep the focus on quality over juiciness," he said, reasoning that in today's digital age, the craving for trusted, reliable, and well-researched news has never been greater.
"The rise of fake news and disinformation threatens the very foundations of journalism, while technology continues to reshape how we consume and share news. However, I am confident that the Sibu Journalists Association will continue to adapt, innovate, and uphold the highest ethical standards and always make conscious efforts to battle fake news," he stressed.
On SJA, the Bintulu MP said it has been a beacon of truth and a voice for the voiceless.
"Your dedication to pursuing the truth and holding those in power accountable have made a profound impact on our community," he said.
A total of 31 journalists serving for 10 to 38 years were presented with a Long Service Medal at the function which included winners of the SJA Press Award.
Sia also announced Tiong's allocation of RM10,000 to SJA for the organising of its activities.
