KUALA LUMPUR: Theme park operators have been given the nod to hire 2,000 more foreign workers, says the Home Minister.

“We have weighed the request by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry to allow the entry of foreign workers for theme parks.

“There is a drastic need to fulfil this with 2,000 foreign workers, and we have agreed after considering it,” Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said after a joint committee meeting with Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar on the management of foreign workers yesterday.

Saifuddin said there are currently 78 theme parks operating nationwide, employing 13,000 workers.

“An extra 2,000 workers are needed to prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” he added.

In a statement issued later, Saifuddin clarified that the intake of the 2,000 additional foreign workers was only for the posts of theme park assistant operators and assistant theme park caretakers.

He said the intake of the additional foreign workers will begin next year and go on until 2025.

Saifuddin also said that operators of barbershops, goldsmiths and textile stores can begin applying for foreign workers based on the 7,500 quota that was approved last month.

Sivakumar had announced last month that the government had agreed to resume the intake of foreign workers for barbershops, goldsmiths and textile stores.
