IGP: Stern action will be taken against deviant teachings

PETALING JAYA: More than 20 members of groups that spread deviant religious teachings have been arrested since last year to date, says the Inspector-General of Police.

In a statement Thursday (Oct 19), Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman took the matter seriously as it could disrupt public safety and pose a security threat to the country.

"Throughout 2022 and 2023 a total of 51 police reports have been (lodged) regarding the activities of such groups.

"In the same time period, 23 arrests have been made by the police and relevant authorities involving members and leaders of these groups.

"These include the Tarekat Habib Shah (20 arrests) and one arrest each involving the Ilmu Akhir Zaman, Nur Mutiara Mutmainnah (NMM) and Suhaini@Sihulk groups," he said.

The IGP added that several groups were currently being monitored by the police including Dewan Perkasa Ekonomi Islam Nusantara (DPEIN), Perjalanan Mimpi Yang Terakhir (PMYT) Millah Abraham, Nur Mutiara Mutmainnah and The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light.

"In the interest of public safety and security, the police will not compromise on taking strict action based on the Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 if any members of these deviant teachings are seen acting or releasing any statements that could bring about public disharmony, unrest and disunity that could affect the security of the country," he said.
