Keeping a close watch on deviant groups

PETALING JAYA: Over 20 individuals involved in deviant religious groups have been arrested since January last year, says the Inspector-General of Police.

Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman took the matter seriously as it could disrupt public safety and pose a security threat to the country.

“Throughout 2022 and 2023, a total of 51 police reports were (lodged) regarding the activities of such groups.

In a statement yesterday, he stated that “in the same time period, the police and relevant authorities have made 23 arrests involving members and leaders of these groups.”

The groups include Tarekat Habib Shah with 20 arrests and one arrest each involving the Ilmu Akhir Zaman, Nur Mutiara Mutmainnah (NMM) and Suhaini@Sihulk groups, he said.

The IGP added several groups are currently being monitored by the police, including Dewan Perkasa Ekonomi Islam Nusantara, Perjalanan Mimpi Yang Terakhir Millah Abraham, Nur Mutiara Mutmainnah and the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light.

“In the interest of public safety and security, the police will not compromise on taking strict action based on the Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”
