Two vessels detained for illegal anchoring in Johor waters

KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two transport vessels for illegal anchoring off Johor waters.

MMEA Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone acting director Maritime Cmdr Mohd Najib Sam said the first vessel was detained 25.2 nautical miles (46.67km) southeast of Tanjung Siang at 1pm on Thursday (Oct 19).

He said the second vessel was stopped by a patrol boat 22.8 nautical miles (42.22km) south-east of Tanjung Balau at 2.45pm the same day.

"The captains of the two Monrovia-registered vessels failed to produce documents (allowing them to) anchor in Malaysian waters," Mohd Najib said in a statement on Friday (Oct 20).

He said the case is being investigated under Section 491B(1)(L) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.

Mohd Najib said six vessels had been detained for illegally anchoring in Johor waters so far this month, while the total from January to date stood at 71.
