KUALA LUMPUR: Good communication skills and decent knowledge of job requirements remain the main traits recruiters look for in a candidate.

Being able to articulate their ideas well is also an important trait employers are looking for, says Toyota Malaysia human resources operations head David Lim.

“Some people do have ideas but when it comes to communication, they fall short when it comes to articulating them. Some have no confidence in conversing in English.

“Jobseekers must build that confidence and have a good working attitude too,” he said, when met at myStarJob Fair 2023 held in Midvalley Exhibition Centre (MVEC) here yesterday.

The Toyota Malaysia booth is offering about 50 positions ranging from management trainees to other managerial positions.

Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd’s General Manager of Human Resources for Plantation, Eugene Jacob, said his company’s participation in the annual job fair is a good platform for the company to create a public presence.

“Aside from recruiting for our 75 vacancies, we are here today to expose the public to KLK and create brand awareness,” said Jacob, who added that throughout the weekend, his colleagues from various departments are there to share knowledge with jobseekers.

“To stand out from the other candidates, I think the jobseeker must always be ready to give something extra, such as knowing the job functions they are applying for,” he said.

For a HR Tech firm specialising in recruitment, FIND, job seekers must be able to manage their expectations when they are looking for jobs.

“The trend now mostly shows that the public wants fully remote working arrangements, which is not always the case for most companies,” said its Managing Director Hann Ng.

Hann said that most companies have returned to either being fully in office or hybrid mode following the ease of Covid-19 restrictions.

At the same time, he said employers also need to adapt to the current situation where talents are expecting a healthier working environment.

Genius Development Workshop Company Ltd founder and chairman Kenneth Ma said Malaysian talents should have important skills when it comes to language.

“About 10% of our staff (in Hong Kong) are Malaysians, and we find that they are unique compared to locals there.

“This is because Malaysians are multilingual, which is an important talent,” he said.

“Given a good environment, Malaysian workers would actually work very hard,” he added.

The education company is offering positions for educators in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as finance and business to support its innovative teaching and learning services.

The job fair that started yesterday will be open until 7pm today.

Organised by Star Media Group, myStarJob Fair features over 60 exhibitors from various companies, and is supported by Reskill Edtech as the Official Resume Clinic Partner and Sendquick as the Official Mobile Messaging Partner.

Visitors stand a chance to win mystery prizes when taking part in the Register & Win contest, Listen & Win contest, and many more attractions throughout the job fair.

The diamond sponsor for the fair is Perbadanan PR1MA Malaysia; platinum sponsors are Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad and Toyota Malaysia; while silver sponsors are FIND, Genius Development, Institut Jantung Negara, and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.

Admission to the fair is free.
