MIC studying suitable seats to contest in GE16, says president

JOHOR BARU: MIC is looking at suitable seats to contest in the 16th General Election, says Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran.

The MIC president said that the party is also in the process of strengthening its grassroots and making sure that existing members are those who are truly committed to the party.

"We need to strengthen our grassroots first and make sure those in the party are not merely members by name.

"There is no point in us having many divisions but when it comes to meetings, there is not enough quorum.

"We have started looking into restructuring the divisions as there is no use in us keeping divisions that only exist on a list but do not have real members," he said.

He told this to reporters when met after attending the Johor MIC convention here on Sunday (Oct 22).

He added that MIC will also be amending its constitution to make it compulsory for state party leaders to meet with division chiefs at least once every three months.

"The decision was made after listening to grouses of the grassroots who said that it can be challenging for them to meet state leaders.

"As such, we will amend our constitution this year to make it compulsory for state leaders to meet with each division chief under them at least once every three months," he said.

On a separate matter, Vigneswaran said that the party will continue working closely with Makkal Sakti both in serving the people and politically.

"We have the same aspiration whereby we want to help the people, especially the Indian community.

"This cooperation will also benefit the Indian community as we will be able to better inform them of the aids and initiatives available for them," he said.
