Couple killed in Penampang crash after birthday party

KOTA KINABALU: Two senior citizens on their way home after attending a family birthday were killed in an accident in Penampang near here on Sunday (Oct 22) evening.

The husband and wife, in their 60s, died on the spot after their car was hit by a four-wheel drive (4WD) along Jalan Pintas, close to Padimas Point, at about 6.50pm.

Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said initial investigations indicated that the couple was believed to be making a U-turn when their car was hit by the other vehicle heading towards Donggongon township.

He said the man driving the 4WD was also seriously injured and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

He said the investigation is still ongoing and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"We urge witnesses to the incident to come forward and provide information," he said on Monday (Oct 23).

Supt Newton advised road users to be careful on the road and urged the public not share photographs of the victims to be mindful of the family's sensitivities.

A Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman said the bodies of the two victims were extricated from the mangled car.
