MALAYSIAN singer Ah Niu (pic) gave a tearful sendoff to his friend and musician Zhang Hui, who collapsed and died last week while playing ping pong, reported China Press.
The 47-year-old picked up a guitar and performed a rendition of Our Families are full of People, a comedic duet in Hokkien and Teochew released by Ah Niu and Zhang in 2000.
Ah Niu, whose real name is Tan Kheng Seong, arrived at his friend’s wake on Sunday morning and was seen expressing condolences to the family.
He told reporters that his journey from Butterworth to Sungai Petani brought back childhood memories he shared with Zhang, including when they would cycle together along the route.
“Zhang Hui is one of my few friends. Even when we were not working together, we still kept in touch.
“You made us laugh all the time, but this time you made us cry!” he said.
It was earlier reported that Zhang, 54, who ran a Shell petrol station, died during a sports day event in Kedah on Oct 18.
He won two straight matches in ping pong before collapsing on the third.
Post-mortem revealed that Zhang died from coronary artery disease.
He is survived by a wife, two daughters and a son.
> A man at Jay Chou’s concert in Shanghai was mobbed by fans as he bore an uncanny resemblance to the King of Mandopop himself, reported Sin Chew Daily.
The man turned many heads as he stood among other concert goers.
As many fans approached him for a photo, the man had to keep explaining that he was not the singer.
“I am not an online celebrity. I am just a salaryman. I came here right after work,” he could be heard explaining to another concert goer in a video.
Soon, a mob formed around him, many of whom held up their phones and demanded to take a photo with him.
A security staffer had to intervene to get him out of the mob.
