Ammonia gas leak results in closure of area around PJ ice factory

PETALING JAYA: A 400m area around an ice factory at Taman Perindustrian Jaya here has been cordoned off following an ammonia gas leak.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the initial leak occurred at around 10.17pm on Tuesday (Oct 24).

"The incident occurred at the ice factory along Jalan PJU 1A/13, Taman Perindustrian Jaya.

"The Fire and Rescue Department was called to the scene as well and we decided to cordon off a 400m area around the premises to avoid any casualties," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Oct 25).

He said although no one was hurt following the gas leak, the public has been advised to stay away from the area until further notice.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said his personnel have identified the cause of the gas leak.

"We are conducting an ongoing operation to dilute the ammonia gas before it is released into the atmosphere.

"As of now we are getting readings of around 240 parts per million inside the premises, but the readings are much lower outside the building," he said, adding that his personnel would remain at the scene to keep the situation under control.

ACP Fakhruddin urged anyone from the vicinity who experienced nausea or vomiting to contact the police immediately and go to the nearest hospital for treatment.

"Motorists should also plan their routes and avoid the area until it was cleared to avoid any untoward incidents" he said.

Those with information on the incident can contact the police hotline at 03-2052 9999 or go to the nearest police station.
