KOTA KINABALU: The Kudat zone Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) intercepted a boat carrying controlled items without a permit on Thursday (Oct 26).

Kudat MMEA director Maritime Commander Maurice Grenville Abeyeratne said that based on information from intelligence, a team made its way to 0.2 nautical miles south of Tanjung Pegasan, Pitas, at 5am.

"Upon reaching the location, a suspicious pump boat was sighted. When approaching the vessel, the skipper escaped by steering the boat into shallow waters and fleeing into the nearby mangrove area.

He said that upon inspection, 400kg of cooking oil in packets and 50 packets of wheat flour were found on the unnumbered boat.

"The total value of the seized boat and confiscated goods are estimated at RM16,000. They were brought to the jetty and handed over to the investigating officer for further action," he said.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for suspicion of carrying controlled goods without valid permission.
