Man arrested for drugs dies in custody


KUALA LUMPUR: A 49-year-old man, who was detained for a drug-related offence, died in custody at Sungai Besar police station's lockup.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Comm Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the man was detained under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 on Oct 26.

"Police personnel on duty found him unconscious and lying face down in his cell at about 3.30am on Oct 27 (Friday).

"The hospital was contacted so that the suspect could receive medical treatment. However, the assistant medical officer present at the scene checked the suspect at 4.40am and confirmed that he had died," he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 28).

The suspect tested negative for Coivd-19 and his post-mortem did not show any injuries as a result of foul play, he said.

"The cause of death is pending laboratory investigation.

"The department's Criminal and Custodial Death Investigation Unit will continue the investigation at all angles before handing over the results to the coroner," he said.
