Roof of Melaka school blown away by strong winds

MELAKA: Eight classrooms and the administration block of SMK Munshi Abdullah in Batu Berendam here were badly damaged because of strong winds on Saturday (Oct 28).

The school's principal, Ramli Abdullah, said damages were severe, and two teachers' rooms were also affected. He also said that the incident happened at about 2.30pm.

"The affected classes were supposed to be used to conduct the SPM trial examination on Monday (Oct 30).

"We will get advice from the Melaka Education Department whether to postpone the trial examination or to continue using alternative classrooms," he said.

Ramli said there were 10 teachers and a group of Form Six students at the school when the incident happened, and no injuries were reported.

He said the worst affected area was the school's Block C.

"However, the nearby hostel wasn't affected," he said.

Meanwhile, Ayer Keroh assemblyman, Kerk Chee Yee, said he has asked relevant departments, including the state Public Works Department, to expedite the remedial works.

The storm also caused several trees at Taman Merdeka to be uprooted and fall on cars.

The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department also rescued a family of four trapped in their car after a tree fell on it.

No casualties were reported.
