Go down to the ground to check on drains, local authorities told (Poll Inside)

SUNGAI SIPUT: Heads of local authorities have been instructed to go down to the ground every week to check that drains are properly maintained to prevent flash floods given the coming monsoon season, says Nga Kor Ming.

The Local Government Development Minister said a total of RM20mil has been allocated to 155 local councils nationwide to ensure that the main drains in cities and towns across Malaysia are in proper condition.

He said the ministry’s secretary-general, state secretaries, and district officers to local council presidents must carry out weekly visits to check whether the appointed contractors are carrying out their work to maintain monsoon drains properly during the rainy season.

“I have instructed the top leadership (of departments) to monitor the progress of the work to make sure the contractors are carrying out maintenance works according to schedule,” Nga said after launching the upgraded Sungai Buloh wet market here yesterday.

He added that maintenance work is ongoing and he is now awaiting the progress report.

Nga said his ministry has also allocated RM1.65mil for the maintenance of seven retention ponds in several areas in Sungai Siput (Utara), such as Taman Muhibaha Jaya, Kampung Muhibah, Rimba Panjang, Taman Lintang Makmur and Kampung Salak Baru.

The ministry has allocated RM11.13mil to carry out 86 projects through its Sentuhan Kasih programme for Sungai Siput district, he added.
