Nine boys arrested over break-ins and thefts in Sibu

SIBU: Nine boys, aged between 11 and 16, have been arrested for thefts involving RM10,500 in losses.

With the arrest, police believed they had solved a spate of shop break-in cases.

OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the group was believed to have committed nine break-ins.

"At about 7.20am on Oct 29, we received a report of a break-in and theft at a coffee shop in the town centre.

"Nine suspects were rounded up in several locations on Oct 29 and 30 around the town," he said on Tuesday (Oct 31).

Several case items were also confiscated to assist in the investigation.

He said checks showed some of the suspects are still schooling.

"The gang targets coffee and retail shops not equipped with CCTV cameras. They broke in during late night and early morning by forcing open the roller shutter doors and stole goods and money," said ACP Zulkipli.

The suspects have been remanded until Nov 3 to assist the probe under Section 457 of the Penal Code.

The offence carries a jail term of up to 14 years, a fine and whipping if convicted.
