IPOH: Flood evacuees need not worry about the security of their homes as frequent patrols will be carried out, says Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.
“It is currently the monsoon season and there are certain districts in Perak that are affected by floods.
“The evacuees need to share with the police the location of their homes and the estimated duration of being housed at temporary shelters,” Comm Mohd Yusri told reporters after attending the Police Crime Prevention and Career Programme at SMK Sungai Pari here yesterday.
“For areas that are still flooded, we will use air surveillance,” he added.
Comm Mohd Yusri said the police had also prepared assets and human resources to help flood victims.
“We are ready to assist the evacuees, including moving them to the nearest shelters,” he said.
The number of flood victims in Perak has increased. A total of 156 victims from 45 families are taking shelter at three relief centres in Kerian, Hilir Perak and Selama.
The Malaysia Meteorological Department has forecast that storms and heavy rain are expected to occur in the afternoon and night in all districts.
Separately, Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 183 students were arrested between January and October this year.
“From the figure, 71 are violent cases, 50 are property crimes and the remaining 62 are non-index crimes, which are minor offences.
“During the same period last year, we arrested 65 students where 44 cases were violent-related, 17 crimes involving property and four non-index crimes,” he said, adding that 19 drug cases were reported between January 2022 and October this year.
“We arrested 11 students in 2022 and eight in 2023. Nine were arrested for drug possession and the remaining 10 tested positive for drugs.”
