Telcos still determining extra fee for 5G access, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Mobile network operators are still determining if extra fees should be charged – or not – for 5G network access, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications and Digital Minister said telecommunications companies have been giving their full cooperation to the government.

"One of the issues discussed is the additional fees. I am leaving this matter to the (ministry's) secretary-general, the co-chairman for the 5G implementation committee.

"We need to cooperate with our telco friends. Let's give them some time to coordinate several matters," he told reporters on Sunday (Nov 5).

Fahmi said he was told that some companies would make announcements soon.

He said Putrajaya was not in favour of extra charges as they did not want to burden Malaysians.

"This is the government's stand... We have reiterated that there shouldn't be any additional charges," he said, adding that he would meet with them soon to discuss the matter further.

It was reported that certain telcos have imposed additional charges for those who wish to have access to 5G networks.
