JOHOR BARU: Proper signs and road dividers will be provided by the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) at a new shortcut connecting Jalan Stulang Darat to the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) here.
Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman said that the new connection, which opened about a week ago, has helped to reduce some of the congestion in the area.
“The Public Works Departments (JKR) completed the project about a week ago and MBJB will soon step in to provide proper signs and dividers to ensure that motorists are aware of this shortcut,” he said.
“At the moment, JKR has installed portable barriers along the new link and we will later provide permanent structure. We will start working on this as soon as possible,” added Mohd Noorazam.
Met after flagging off the Sunbeam Run 2023 on Sunday (Nov 5), he said that there have been improvements in the flow of traffic following the opening of the new link as motorists no longer have to go through Jalan Pasir Pelangi to get on the EDL.
The Star had previously reported that the Johor government will be building a new connection from Jalan Stulang Darat to the EDL in a bid to reduce congestion at the area.
State works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said this was part of a short-term solution to reduce congestion in Johor Baru city centre and areas around it.
“The EDL will be upgraded to better cope with the increasing volume of vehicles, but it will take between two and three years for the upgrades to be completed,” said Mohamad Fazli.
He added that the new connection will allow motorists to enter directly from Jalan Stulang Darat and help reduce some of the congestion around the area
“In the meantime, we have to come up with a solution to address congestion on the EDL, which is also being used by those traveling to Singapore,” said Mohamad Fazli.
