Johor Baru city councillor lodges report after receiving threats

JOHOR BARU: A Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) member has said that she received a threatening message for doing her job.

Chan San San said that she received a text message from a person believed to be the owner of a shop selling second-hand cars on Oct 24.

She said during a press conference at the Pasir Gudang MCA division headquarters that the man told her “not to force the tiger to go crazy and bite a person to death”.

"In the text message,in Mandarin, he said that 'there is still a chance for us to work together'. I have since lodged a police report over the matter as I am worried about my safety. There are proper channels he could go to to object to any actions taken by MBJB. This is not the way," she said.

Chan added that she lodged the report at the Johor Jaya police station, and said that the man also claimed that he has people in MBJB who are keeping a watchful eye on her.

"He pointed out that I had brought up the matter in three meetings, which was accurate. This shows someone is exposing what was being discussed in the meetings, which are supposed to be confidential. As such, I hope that MBJB will also look into this matter," she said.

Chan said it all started in March when she received complaints from residents living around Jalan Bunga Matahari about a shop that was said to be operating illegally.

The used car shop used a plot of land that belonged to the government to display the cars.

"I then brought the matter up to MBJB during a meeting and asked them to investigate it. MBJB later took action against the owner and issued warnings before sealing the area.

"He has since removed the cars, but perhaps he was still unhappy with the action taken against him," she said.

Meanwhile, when contacted, a police official confirmed receiving the report regarding the threat on Nov 2.
