ASAJAYA: A total of RM 13.2mil has been approved for the construction of a Fire and Rescue Department station and two firemen's quarters in Sarawak.
Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said the project involved the construction of Sungai Asap Fire and Rescue Station and living quarters for the Tatau and Daro fire stations.
"It is understood that these three projects will be fully completed by the beginning of 2025 or 18 months from the start of construction," he said after officiating the Asajaya BBP here on Monday (Nov 6).
Nga said with the completion of the Asajaya station worth RM9.1mil in March, the total number of fire stations in Sarawak now stands at 38.
He said the nearest fire stations were in Simunjan, Kota Samarahan and Tabuan Jaya, which are more than 30km away takes almost 30 minutes by road.
"Now with the Asajaya fire station, the response time will be shorter and the team will be able save lives and properties of residents," he said.
He also said that Sarawak, with 124,450 sq km land area – which is almost the same as the peninsula – 38 stations in reality are not enough for the whole state.
"In future, when more new stations are built and operating, the response time of the fire department will be better achieved," he said. – Bernama
