Ruckus at Thai bazaar in Penang turns festive atmosphere ugly

GEORGE TOWN: The festive atmosphere at the Thailand & International Bazaar Street Food Festival here turned ugly when a group of men caused a commotion at the scene on Saturday (Nov 4) night.

One of them could be seen manhandling a stall operator, said to be the son of famous Singaporean artiste Wang Lei who goes by the moniker “Mai Yu Ge” (Fish Selling Brother).

Several videos of the incident have since gone viral online.

Wang’s son, popularly known as “Mai Yu Chai” (Fish Selling Kid), was caught by surprise, China Press reported.

His team members stepped in to prevent the incident from escalating following an angry verbal exchange.

Earlier, Wang’s son was conducting a live broadcast to sell products during the event outside a shopping mall in Tanjung Tokong.

He was seen engaging with fans via Facebook live. Also at the stall to show “Mai Yu Chai '' support were "Thai Hot Guys” Dee Wow-Sarawut Siriphet and Veerasak Mahsahaao.

The Guys, known for entertaining diners with saucy moves at their restaurant in Bangkok, were also seen breaking up the commotion at one point.

In the video, several people are heard saying: "Call the police, call the police."

It is learnt that some of those involved were brought to a police station for questioning.

On Sunday (Nov 5), George Town acting OCPD Supt V. Saravanan said a press statement would be issued on the matter.

Meanwhile, a representative of event planner Eventers said the company had secured all the necessary approvals from the Penang Island City Council and the mall’s management.
