Man in court after trying to hit son with machete


KUALA KANGSAR: A man who was arrested for punching and kicking his 12-year-old son recently has been charged in the Sessions Court here with possessing a machete.

The 37-year-old man pleaded not guilty to having in his possession a machete on the side of the road in Kampung Perah, Gerik, at about 3.45pm, Oct 30.

The charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and caning, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Firdaus Nor Azlan did not offer any bail, while the accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, did not plead for bail, Bernama reported.

Judge Rohaida Ishak set Dec 6 for mention, to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer. The accused was not allowed bail.

On Oct 29, the 12-year-old boy was reportedly assaulted by the accused while at his aunt’s house in Kampung Perah.

Gerik district police chief Supt Zulkifli Mahmood said the accused also swung a machete and almost hit the boy with the weapon.
