KOTA KINABALU: A worker was shocked to find a stillborn baby boy behind a cistern while cleaning a homestay at Jalan Kepayan here.
The worker was earlier alerted by a foul smell coming from the toilet and conducted an inspection at 2.30pm on Monday (Nov 6).
The worker then noticed a plastic bag behind the tank and was horrified on checking its contents.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the police rushed to the location on being alerted by the staff.
“We found the body of the baby boy, which we believe had just been born,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 7).
“The remains have been sent to the forensics unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I for a postmortem,” he added.
ACP Mohd Zaidi said they were tracking down a 20-year-old woman who had stayed at the establishment earlier in connection with the case.
“The woman had checked into the homestay three days before the body was found,” he said.
The case, he added, was being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body.
ACP Mohd Zaidi also urged those with information about the case to contact investigating officer Insp Nur Hatin Amera Mohd Khir at 0111-293 9436 or the nearest police station.
On Sunday (Nov 5), a newborn baby girl was abandoned at the doorsteps of a mosque on Jalan Maktab Gaya, Luyang.
A note was also found with the baby, who was found to be in healthy condition, pleading for the child to be taken care of and placed in a foster home.
